Scar Revision
Overview
Scar and keloid surgery addresses scars that are raised, tight, symptomatic, or cosmetically prominent. No scar can be erased, but appearance, comfort, and function can often be improved.
Treatment is selected based on scar type, location, cause, and your goals. Options include surgical revision, steroid injection, silicone therapy, pressure therapy, and combination approaches. For keloids, a multimodal strategy is often required to reduce recurrence risk.
What to Expect
Scar revision may involve excision and re-closure, Z-plasty or W-plasty to reorient the scar, or tissue rearrangement for contracted scars. Keloid treatment often combines excision with adjuvant therapy (steroid injection, pressure therapy, silicone, sometimes radiotherapy) to reduce recurrence. Steroid injections alone can flatten and soften hypertrophic scars and keloids without surgery in selected cases. Surgery is usually performed under local anaesthetic. Recovery depends on technique and location; most return to normal activities within 1-2 weeks. Scar maturation continues for 12-18 months.

Before & After
FAQs
Can a scar be completely removed?
No. A scar can be revised to make it less noticeable, narrower, flatter, or better positioned, but some mark will remain.
Will a keloid come back after surgery?
Keloids have a recurrence risk. Multimodal treatment (surgery plus adjuvant therapy) reduces this risk but cannot eliminate it entirely.
How long before I see the final result?
Scars continue to mature for 12-18 months. Early redness and firmness are normal and gradually settle.
Is steroid injection painful?
There is brief discomfort during injection. This settles quickly. Multiple sessions may be needed depending on response.
When can I return to normal activities?
Most return within 1-2 weeks. Wound care and activity restrictions depend on location and technique.
